Plan your bookshelf dimensions

Decide on the final size of your bookshelf. A good starter size is 24 inches wide, 30 inches tall, and 8 inches deep. Sketch a simple diagram showing the side panels, top, bottom, and 2-3 shelves. This helps visualize the project before cutting.

Gather and prepare your workspace

Set up in a well-ventilated area with enough room to cut and assemble wood. Lay out all your tools and materials. Cover the work surface with a drop cloth or cardboard to protect it from sawdust and glue.

Measure and mark the wood

Using your tape measure and pencil, mark cutting lines on the pine boards. You'll need: 2 side panels (30 inches long), 1 top piece (24 inches), 1 bottom piece (24 inches), and 2-3 shelves (23 inches each to fit between the sides).

Cut the boards to size

Carefully cut along your marked lines using a hand saw or circular saw. Take your time and follow the line closely. For a hand saw, use smooth, steady strokes. Always cut on the waste side of the line so your pieces aren't too short.

Sand all the pieces

Sand every cut piece thoroughly with 120-grit sandpaper, working in the direction of the wood grain. Pay extra attention to the cut edges to remove splinters. Then go over everything with 220-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish. Wipe away dust with a clean cloth.

Mark shelf placement on side panels

Lay both side panels flat. Measure and mark where each shelf will go, ensuring they're level and evenly spaced. A good spacing is 9-10 inches between shelves. Use a pencil to draw light lines across both panels at the same heights so shelves align perfectly.

Drill pilot holes

At each shelf marking, drill 2-3 small pilot holes through the side panels from the outside. These holes prevent the wood from splitting when you drive in screws later. Space the holes evenly across the width of each shelf position.

Attach the bottom shelf

Stand one side panel upright and position the bottom shelf piece flush with the bottom edge. Apply wood glue to the joint, then drive 1.25-inch wood screws through the pilot holes to secure. Repeat with the other side panel. Make sure everything is square.

Attach the middle shelves

Working from bottom to top, position each shelf at its marked location. Apply glue to both ends of the shelf, align it with your marks, and secure with screws through the pilot holes. Check that each shelf is level before the glue dries.

Attach the top shelf

Position the top shelf piece flush with the top edges of both side panels. Apply glue and secure with screws just like the other shelves. This completes the basic box structure of your bookshelf.

Reinforce with corner brackets (optional)

For extra stability, attach small metal corner brackets at the inside corners where shelves meet the side panels. This step is especially helpful if you plan to load the bookshelf with heavy books.

Fill screw holes and imperfections

Apply wood filler to all visible screw holes, gaps, and any dents or scratches. Use a putty knife to smooth it flush with the surface. Let the filler dry completely according to package directions (usually 30-60 minutes).

Sand the filled areas

Once the wood filler is dry, lightly sand the filled spots with 220-grit sandpaper until they're smooth and level with the surrounding wood. Wipe away all dust with a clean, slightly damp cloth.

Apply finish or paint

Apply your choice of finish—wood stain, paint, or clear polyurethane. Use a brush or cloth to apply an even coat, following the wood grain. Allow to dry completely (check product instructions). Apply a second coat if desired for better coverage and protection.

Let it cure and position

Allow the finish to cure fully (usually 24 hours) before loading books. Once dry, position your bookshelf against a wall. For safety, especially if you have children or pets, use furniture anchors to secure it to the wall studs.
