Build a solid, freestanding workbench perfect for garage projects and repairs. This beginner-friendly design takes about 4-6 hours to complete and requires basic carpentry skills. You'll end up with a durable 6-foot workspace that can handle heavy tools and projects.
Measure your garage space and decide where the workbench will go. This guide builds a 6-foot long by 2-foot deep bench that stands 36 inches tall. Mark the floor area with painter's tape to visualize the footprint and ensure it fits comfortably with room to work around it.
Using your circular saw or miter saw, cut four 4x4 posts to 34.5 inches long for the workbench legs. Measure twice and mark clearly with a pencil and carpenter's square before each cut. These will be the vertical supports for your bench.
Cut four 2x4 boards to 69 inches long for the front and back frame rails, and four 2x4 boards to 21 inches long for the side rails. These will connect the legs and create the support structure. Label each piece with painter's tape so you don't mix them up.
Lay two legs on the ground parallel to each other, 69 inches apart (outside edge to outside edge). Position one 69-inch rail across the top, flush with the leg tops, and another 6 inches from the bottom. Connect them with the four 21-inch side rails—one on each side at the top (flush with leg tops) and one on each side 6 inches from the bottom. Attach with 3-inch screws, pre-drilling first. Check that the structure is square before fully tightening.
Cut two 2x4 boards at 45-degree angles to fit diagonally across the back lower frame (from one leg bottom to the opposite top rail). This prevents wobbling. Measure the exact length needed, cut, then attach with 3-inch screws at each end.
Measure and cut your 3/4-inch plywood sheet to 72 inches long by 24 inches wide. Use a circular saw with a straight edge clamped as a guide for clean cuts. This will overhang the frame slightly on all sides for a professional look and easier clamping.
Using 120-grit sandpaper or an orbital sander, smooth all wooden surfaces including the frame and plywood top. Pay special attention to edges and corners that might cause splinters. Wipe away dust with a tack cloth when finished.
Center the plywood on top of the frame so there's equal overhang on all sides (about 1.5 inches on the long sides, 1.5 inches on the short sides). Attach it by driving 2-inch wood screws down through the plywood into the top rails every 8-10 inches around the perimeter. Pre-drill to avoid cracking.
Apply two coats of polyurethane or wood sealer to the plywood worktop to protect it from spills, stains, and moisture. Use a brush or foam applicator and let each coat dry completely (check product directions, usually 2-4 hours). Sand lightly with 220-grit between coats for a smooth finish.
Move the completed workbench to its final location in your garage. Use a level on the worktop to check that it's perfectly flat. If the floor is uneven, add shims under the legs until the bench is stable and level in all directions.
If desired, cut another piece of 3/4-inch plywood to 69 inches by 21 inches and rest it on the lower frame rails for storage. Secure with 1.5-inch screws from underneath. This gives you extra space for storing tools and supplies.
