Cut your hardwood board (like oak or maple) to your desired length using a miter saw or circular saw. Make sure the cut is perfectly square. Sand the cut end smooth with 120-grit sandpaper. A 1x8 or 1x10 board works well for most floating shelves.
Measure and mark a centerline along the back of the board. Using a router with a straight bit or a chisel, create two parallel channels (about 1.5 inches apart) that are deep enough to fit over your metal rod brackets. The channels should be about 3/4 the depth of the board and run nearly the full length.
Place your metal rod brackets (typically 1/2-inch steel rods) into the routed channels to ensure they fit snugly. The rods should slide in smoothly but without too much wiggle room. Adjust the channels with the router or chisel if needed.
Sand all surfaces of the shelf starting with 120-grit sandpaper, then progress to 180-grit, and finish with 220-grit for a smooth surface. Pay special attention to edges and corners. Wipe away all dust with a tack cloth.
