Gather and prepare your workspace

Set up a clean, flat workspace covered with newspaper or parchment paper to catch any spills. Gather all your materials and tools so everything is within reach. This will make the process smoother since you'll need to work relatively quickly once the wax melts.

Prepare your candle containers

Clean your glass jars or tins thoroughly with soap and water, then dry them completely. Any moisture or residue can affect how your candle sets. Place them on your workspace where they'll stay undisturbed while the wax cools.

Secure the candle wicks

Apply a small dot of hot glue or wick sticker to the bottom of each wick tab. Press it firmly into the center of each jar bottom. Let it set for a minute to ensure it's secure. The wick needs to stay centered and straight throughout the pouring process.

Center and stabilize the wicks

Place a wick centering device over each jar, or lay two pencils or chopsticks across the top of the jar and sandwich the wick between them to keep it centered and upright. The wick should be taut and perfectly vertical.

Measure the soy wax flakes

Weigh out your soy wax flakes using a kitchen scale. For three 8 oz candles, you'll need approximately 24 oz (680g) of wax flakes. It's better to have a little extra than to run short.

Set up your double boiler

Fill a large pot with 2-3 inches of water and place it on the stove over medium heat. Place your pouring pitcher or heat-safe glass bowl on top, making sure the bottom doesn't touch the water. This double boiler method prevents the wax from overheating.

Melt the soy wax

Add the soy wax flakes to your pouring pitcher and let them melt slowly, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon or silicone spatula. Monitor the temperature with a candle thermometer. Heat until the wax reaches 170-180°F (76-82°C) and is completely liquid with no solid pieces remaining.

Cool the wax to the right temperature

Remove the pitcher from heat and let the wax cool to 120-140°F (49-60°C). This is the ideal temperature for adding fragrance and pouring. This cooling process usually takes 10-15 minutes. Stir occasionally to help it cool evenly.

Add essential oils

Once the wax reaches 120-140°F, add your essential oils. Use about 1 oz (30ml) of essential oil per pound of wax for a strong scent, or adjust to your preference. Stir gently but thoroughly for 1-2 minutes to distribute the fragrance evenly throughout the wax.

Pour the wax into jars

Carefully pour the scented wax into your prepared jars, pouring slowly down the side to minimize air bubbles. Fill each jar to about ½ inch from the top, leaving room for the wax to settle. Keep the wick centered as you pour.

Let candles cool undisturbed

Allow the candles to cool and harden at room temperature for at least 4-6 hours, preferably overnight. Don't move them or disturb them during this time, as this can cause cracks or uneven surfaces. The wax will lighten in color as it solidifies.

Trim the wicks

Once the candles are completely cool and solid, remove the centering tools. Use scissors to trim each wick to about ¼ inch above the wax surface. This length ensures a clean, safe burn when you light the candle.

Cure and enjoy

For best scent throw and burn quality, let your candles cure for 1-2 weeks before burning. Store them in a cool, dry place during this time. After curing, light and enjoy your handmade candles, or wrap them up as thoughtful homemade gifts!
