Learn to make beautiful, natural soy candles scented with essential oils in about 2 hours. This beginner-friendly project is perfect for anyone wanting to create custom home fragrances or handmade gifts. You'll end up with clean-burning candles that fill your space with lovely aromas.
Clear a clean, flat workspace near your stove. Lay down newspaper or parchment paper to protect surfaces. Gather all your materials and tools so everything is within reach before you start melting wax.
Clean your jars or tins thoroughly with soap and water, then dry completely. Any moisture or residue will affect how your candles set. Place them on your protected workspace.
Apply a small dot of hot glue or wick sticker to the metal tab at the bottom of each wick. Press firmly into the center of each jar bottom. Use a clothespin or pencil laid across the jar top to hold the wick straight and centered while you work.
Using your kitchen scale, measure out soy wax flakes. A good rule is to fill your container with flakes, then double that amount to account for melting. For two 8 oz jars, you'll need about 1 pound of wax flakes.
Fill your large pot with 2-3 inches of water and place on the stove. Put the pouring pitcher inside the pot, making sure water doesn't get inside the pitcher. This double boiler method prevents the wax from overheating.
Add your measured wax flakes to the pitcher. Heat on medium-low, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon. The wax will take 10-15 minutes to fully melt into a clear liquid. Never leave melting wax unattended.
Once fully melted, clip your thermometer to the pitcher. Heat the wax until it reaches 180-185°F. This temperature ensures proper scent distribution and helps the wax adhere to your containers.
Remove the pitcher from heat and let the wax cool to 160-170°F. This takes about 5-10 minutes. Adding essential oils at the right temperature prevents the scent from burning off and ensures even distribution.
Once at 160-170°F, add your essential oils. Use about 1 ounce (30ml) of essential oil per pound of wax for a strong scent. Stir gently but thoroughly for 2 minutes to distribute the fragrance evenly throughout the wax.
Carefully pour the scented wax into your prepared jars, leaving about 1/2 inch of space at the top. Pour slowly and steadily to avoid air bubbles. Keep the wick centered with your clothespin or pencil.
Allow candles to cool at room temperature for at least 4 hours, or overnight is best. Don't move them or disturb the workspace. You may notice the wax pulling away from the sides slightly or developing a sink hole in the center—this is normal.
If you have sink holes or uneven tops, gently reheat a small amount of leftover wax to 160°F and pour a thin layer on top to create a smooth finish. Let this cool for another 2-3 hours.
Once completely hardened, remove the clothespins and trim wicks to 1/4 inch using scissors. For best scent throw, let your candles cure for 24-48 hours before burning. This allows the fragrance to fully bind with the wax.
Add decorative labels if desired, noting the scent and date made. When ready to burn, always trim the wick to 1/4 inch before each use and never burn for more than 4 hours at a time. Enjoy your handmade candles!
