Prepare your workspace and gather materials

Set up a clean, flat workspace covered with newspaper or a protective cloth. Lay out all your materials within easy reach. This preparation makes the process smoother since you'll need to work quickly once the wax is melted.

Secure the candle wicks

Use a small dab of melted wax or a wick sticker to attach the metal tab of each wick to the center bottom of your containers. Press firmly to ensure they're secure. Use a clothespin, pencil, or wick centering device across the top of the container to keep the wick standing straight and centered.

Measure the soy wax flakes

Using your kitchen scale, measure out your soy wax flakes. A good rule of thumb is that you'll need about twice the volume of wax flakes as the container size. For example, for an 8 oz container, measure about 16 oz (1 lb) of wax flakes to account for the wax shrinking as it melts.

Set up your double boiler

Fill your large pot with 2-3 inches of water and place it on the stove over medium heat. Place your smaller pot or heat-safe pouring pitcher inside the larger pot, making sure the bottom doesn't touch the water. This double boiler method prevents the wax from overheating or scorching.

Melt the soy wax

Add the measured soy wax flakes to your double boiler. Stir occasionally with a wooden spoon or heat-safe stirrer as the wax melts. Heat the wax to 170-180°F (77-82°C), monitoring with your thermometer. This should take about 10-15 minutes. Never leave melting wax unattended.

Cool the wax to proper temperature

Once fully melted and clear, remove the wax from heat and let it cool to 120-140°F (49-60°C). This is the ideal temperature range for adding essential oils and pouring. Cooling takes about 5-10 minutes. Stir occasionally to help it cool evenly.

Add essential oils and stir thoroughly

When the wax reaches the proper temperature, add your essential oils. Use about 1 oz (30 ml) of essential oil per pound of wax for a strong scent, or adjust to your preference. Stir gently but thoroughly for 1-2 minutes to ensure the oils are completely distributed throughout the wax.

Pour the wax into containers

Carefully pour the scented wax into your prepared containers, keeping the wick centered. Pour slowly to minimize air bubbles. Fill to about 1/2 inch from the top of the container. If you notice the wick moving, gently reposition it with your wick centering tool while the wax is still liquid.

Set aside to cool and cure

Place your candles in a safe, undisturbed location at room temperature. Let them cool for at least 4-6 hours, or overnight for best results. Avoid moving them or exposing them to drafts during this time. You may notice the surface becoming slightly uneven or forming a sink hole in the center—this is normal.

Fix any surface imperfections (if needed)

If your candles developed sink holes or uneven surfaces, you can do a second pour. Reheat a small amount of leftover wax to 170°F, let it cool to 140°F, and carefully pour a thin layer over the top. This creates a smooth, professional finish.

Trim the wicks

Once completely cooled and hardened, remove the wick centering tools. Use scissors to trim each wick to about 1/4 inch above the wax surface. This is the ideal length for a clean, even burn.

Cure and prepare for use

For the best scent throw and burn quality, let your candles cure for 1-2 weeks before burning. Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Once cured, your candles are ready to use or gift!
