Prepare your workspace and gather materials

Set up a clean, flat workspace covered with newspaper or parchment paper to catch any spills. Gather all your materials and tools so everything is within reach. Make sure your candle jars are clean and completely dry.

Secure the wicks in your jars

Use a small dot of hot glue or wick sticker to attach the metal tab of each wick to the center bottom of your jar. Press down firmly and hold for a few seconds. Use a wick holder, pencil, or chopstick laid across the top of the jar to keep the wick centered and straight while you work.

Measure your wax

Measure out your soy wax flakes using a kitchen scale. As a general rule, use about twice the volume of wax flakes as the jar capacity (for example, 16 oz of wax for an 8 oz jar, since wax reduces when melted). It's better to have a little extra than not enough.

Create a double boiler setup

Fill your large pot with 2-3 inches of water and place it on the stove over medium heat. Place your pouring pitcher or heat-safe glass container inside the pot, making sure the water level doesn't reach the top of the pitcher. This gentle heating method prevents the wax from burning.

Melt the wax

Add your measured soy wax flakes to the pouring pitcher. Stir occasionally with a wooden spoon or spatula as the wax melts. Heat until completely liquid with no solid pieces remaining, which usually takes 10-15 minutes. Monitor the temperature with your thermometer.

Heat to proper temperature

Continue heating the wax until it reaches 170-180°F (76-82°C). This is the ideal temperature for adding fragrance. Don't exceed 185°F as this can burn the wax or reduce scent quality. Remove from heat once you reach this temperature.

Add essential oils

Once the wax reaches 170-180°F, remove it from heat and add your essential oils. Use about 1 oz (30ml) of essential oil per pound of wax for a strong scent, or adjust to preference. Stir gently but thoroughly for 1-2 minutes to distribute the fragrance evenly throughout the wax.

Cool to pouring temperature

Let the wax cool to 130-140°F (54-60°C) before pouring. This usually takes 10-15 minutes. Cooling to this temperature helps prevent sinkholes, frosting, and ensures good adhesion to the jar. Stir occasionally as it cools.

Pour the wax into jars

Carefully pour the melted wax into your prepared jars, holding the wick centered with your wick holder. Pour slowly to avoid air bubbles. Fill to about ½ inch from the top of the jar. If the wick moves, gently reposition it while the wax is still liquid.

Let candles cool completely

Allow your candles to cool and harden at room temperature for at least 4-6 hours, or overnight for best results. Don't move them during this time. You may notice some slight shrinking or a small depression forming around the wick—this is normal.

Trim wicks and cure

Once fully hardened, trim the wicks to ¼ inch above the wax surface using scissors. For optimal scent throw and burn quality, let your candles cure for 24-48 hours before burning. This allows the fragrance to fully bind with the wax.

Add finishing touches (optional)

If desired, add labels to your jars with the scent name and date made. You can also add decorative elements like ribbon, twine, or custom labels. Your homemade soy candles are now ready to enjoy or gift!
