Cut two rectangles of canvas fabric, each measuring 14 inches wide by 16 inches tall. These will be the front and back panels of your tote bag.
Cut two long strips of canvas, each measuring 4 inches wide by 24 inches long. These will become your sturdy tote handles.
Fold each strap in half lengthwise with wrong sides together, then fold each raw edge into the center fold. Press with an iron, then sew along both long edges about 1/8 inch from the edge.
Pin one strap to the top edge of each panel, positioning them about 3 inches from each side. The straps should face downward with raw edges aligned at the top. Baste in place with a quick stitch.
Place the two panels right sides together with straps tucked inside. Pin along the sides and bottom. Sew with a 1/2 inch seam allowance, leaving the top open. Backstitch at the start and end for strength.
To give your bag a flat bottom, pinch each bottom corner so the side seam meets the bottom seam. Mark a line 2 inches from the point and sew across it. Trim the excess triangle of fabric.
Turn the bag right side out. Fold the top edge down 1/2 inch toward the inside, press, then fold down another 1 inch. Press again and pin in place. Sew around the entire top edge to create a clean hem.
Flip the straps up into their final position. Sew a small rectangle or X-shape where each strap meets the bag to secure them firmly. This ensures your tote can handle heavy loads!
