Create your own custom screen printed tote bag with a design of your choice. This beginner-friendly project takes about 2-3 hours including drying time and results in a professional-looking, personalized bag perfect for gifts or everyday use. No previous screen printing experience needed!
Choose or create a simple, bold design that will translate well to screen printing. Print it out on regular paper in black and white, sized to fit your desired placement on the tote bag (typically 8-10 inches wide works well). High contrast designs with solid areas work best for beginners.
Trace your design onto the transparency film using a thick black marker, or print directly onto transparency film if your printer allows it. Make sure all areas you want to print are completely opaque/solid black, as light needs to be blocked in those areas. Let any marker ink dry completely.
Cover your work surface with newspaper or a plastic drop cloth. Ensure you have good ventilation and access to running water. Lay out all your materials so they're within easy reach. Put on your apron or old clothes as screen printing can get messy.
If your screen printing frame isn't pre-coated, apply a thin, even layer of photo emulsion to both sides of the screen using the squeegee or coating tool. Work in a dimly lit room to prevent premature exposure. Let it dry completely in a dark space (this can take 1-2 hours or overnight).
Once the emulsion is dry, place your transparency film with the design on top of the screen (emulsion side). Put a piece of clear glass or acrylic over it to hold it flat. Expose to bright light (sunlight or exposure lamp) for the time recommended by your emulsion manufacturer (typically 15-30 minutes in direct sunlight). The areas not covered by your design will harden.
Take the screen to a sink or use a hose with gentle pressure. Spray both sides of the screen with cool water, focusing on the design area. You'll see your design start to wash away, leaving open mesh where the ink will pass through. Continue rinsing until the design is completely clear and no more emulsion washes out. Pat dry with paper towels and let air dry completely.
Wash and dry your plain tote bag to remove any sizing or chemicals that might prevent ink adhesion. Iron it smooth to remove wrinkles. Place a piece of cardboard inside the bag to create a flat surface and prevent ink from bleeding through to the back side.
Center your prepared screen on the tote bag where you want your design to appear. Use small pieces of masking tape to mark the corners if needed for alignment. Make sure the bag is laying completely flat and smooth underneath the screen.
Pour a thick line of fabric screen printing ink along the top edge of your design area on the screen (about 2-3 tablespoons). The ink should form a bead across the width of your design. Make sure you have enough ink to cover the entire design in one pass.
Hold the screen firmly in place with one hand. Using the squeegee at a 45-degree angle, pull the ink across the design area with firm, even pressure in one smooth motion. Immediately do a second pass in the opposite direction to ensure good coverage. Lift the screen straight up carefully.
Inspect your print for any gaps or thin areas. If needed, carefully lower the screen back into the exact same position and do another pass with the squeegee. Be careful not to smudge the wet ink. Once satisfied, carefully remove any masking tape guides.
Allow the ink to air dry for at least 24 hours. Once completely dry, place a clean cloth or parchment paper over the design and iron on high heat (cotton setting) for 3-5 minutes, moving the iron constantly. This heat-sets the ink and makes it permanent and washable. Let cool completely.
Immediately after printing, rinse the screen thoroughly with cool water to remove all ink before it dries. Use a soft brush if needed to clean the mesh. Dry the screen and store it flat for future use. Your custom screen printed tote bag is now ready to use!
