Cut two rectangles of canvas fabric, each measuring 16 inches wide by 18 inches tall. These will form the front and back of your tote bag.
Cut two strips of canvas fabric, each 4 inches wide and 24 inches long. These will become your sturdy carrying handles.
Fold each strap in half lengthwise with wrong sides together, then fold the raw edges into the center. Press with an iron, then topstitch along both long edges about 1/8 inch from the edge.
Pin each strap to the right side of one fabric panel, positioning them about 4 inches from the side edges. The straps should point downward with ends aligned to the top raw edge. Baste in place.
Place both panels right sides together with straps sandwiched inside. Sew along the sides and bottom using a 1/2 inch seam allowance, leaving the top open. Backstitch over the straps for extra strength.
Flatten each bottom corner so the side seam meets the bottom seam, forming a triangle. Measure and mark 2 inches from the point, then sew straight across. Trim the excess fabric. This gives your bag a flat bottom.
Turn the bag right side out. Fold the top edge down 1/2 inch toward the inside, press, then fold down another 1 inch. Press again and pin in place.
Sew around the entire top opening close to the folded edge. When you reach each strap, sew a small rectangle or X pattern through the strap and bag for reinforcement. Give it a final press and you're done!
