Cut two rectangles of canvas fabric, each measuring 15 inches wide by 17 inches tall. These will form the front and back of your tote bag.
Cut two long strips of canvas fabric, each measuring 4 inches wide by 24 inches long. These will become your sturdy bag handles.
Fold each strap in half lengthwise with wrong sides together, then fold the raw edges into the center fold. Press with an iron, then topstitch along both long edges about 1/8 inch from the edge.
Pin one strap to each main fabric piece, positioning the ends about 4 inches from each side edge and 1 inch down from the top. The strap should face downward. Sew a small rectangle with an X inside at each strap end for extra strength.
Place both panels right sides together with straps tucked inside. Pin along the sides and bottom. Sew with a 1/2 inch seam allowance, leaving the top open. Backstitch at the beginning and end.
To give your bag a flat bottom, pinch each bottom corner so the side seam meets the bottom seam. Measure 2 inches from the point and draw a line. Sew along this line, then trim the excess fabric.
Turn the bag right side out. Fold the top edge down 1/2 inch toward the inside and press. Fold again 1 inch and press. Pin in place, then topstitch around the entire top edge close to the inner fold.
Give your finished tote a final press with the iron. Check all seams are secure, especially where the straps attach. Trim any loose threads, and your tote bag is ready to use!
