Lay out all your materials on a flat work surface. Check that your pre-cut wood pieces are smooth — if they have rough edges, lightly sand them so kids won't get splinters.
On the front panel piece, use a pencil to mark a circle about 1.5 inches across, centered and 2 inches from the top. An adult should drill this hole using the 1.5 inch spade bit. This is the perfect size for small birds.
Have the kids apply wood glue along the edges of the front, back, and side panels. Press them together to form a box shape (no top or bottom yet). Hold pieces steady while an adult adds 2-3 small nails or screws per joint to secure them.
Apply glue to the bottom edges of the assembled walls. Place the floor piece on top and press down firmly. Let kids help hold it while an adult nails or screws it in place from the bottom with 4 fasteners, one near each corner.
Apply glue along the top edges of the walls. Place the roof piece on top at a slight angle so rain will run off. Kids can hold it steady while an adult secures it with 4-5 nails or screws along the edges.
Let the glue dry for 30 minutes. Then kids can paint the birdhouse with non-toxic outdoor paint in fun colors. Add designs, patterns, or their names. Let it dry completely overnight before mounting.
Choose a sheltered spot on your patio 5-6 feet high, away from direct weather. Use a mounting bracket or hook to hang the birdhouse securely, or screw it directly to a post or wall through the back panel.
