Build a charming backyard birdhouse in about 1–2 hours with minimal tools. Perfect for kids aged 6+ with adult supervision. Most pieces are pre-cut, so kids can focus on assembling, decorating, and making it their own!
Adult: Using the saw, cut the pine board into these pieces: 1 front (7" × 8"), 1 back (7" × 9"), 2 sides (5" × 8" each), 1 floor (5" × 5"), 2 roof pieces (5" × 7" each). On the front piece, drill a 1.5" entrance hole centered about 2" from the top. Sand all edges smooth with 120-grit sandpaper so there are no splinters.
Lay out all the pre-cut wooden pieces on your work table. Arrange them in order: front, back, two sides, floor, and two roof pieces. Let kids identify each piece and where it will go. Set out the wood glue, hammer, nails, and any paint or decorations nearby.
Apply a thin line of wood glue along the bottom edge of the front piece. Press it firmly onto one edge of the floor piece, making sure it's centered. Hold it steady for 10 seconds. Then hammer in 2 nails through the front into the floor edge to secure it. Kids can hold the pieces while an adult hammers.
Apply wood glue to the bottom edge of the back piece. Press it onto the opposite edge of the floor from the front, creating a box shape. The back piece is taller, so the extra inch will stick up above the front. Hammer in 2 nails through the back into the floor to hold it in place.
Put glue along the side edge of the floor, and also along the side edges of the front and back pieces. Press one side piece into place, connecting all three edges. It should form a corner. Have a helper hold it steady while you hammer 2 nails through the side into the front edge, 2 into the back edge, and 1 into the floor.
Repeat the same process on the other side: apply glue to all connecting edges, press the second side piece into place, and secure it with nails — 2 into the front, 2 into the back, and 1 into the floor. Now you have a complete box with an entrance hole in the front.
Take one roof piece and apply glue along one long edge. Place it on top of the birdhouse box, resting one edge on the taller back piece so it slopes downward toward the front. The roof should overhang slightly on the sides. Hammer in 3–4 nails through the roof into the top edges of the front and back.
Apply glue to the long edge of the second roof piece. Place it on the other side of the roof, overlapping slightly with the first panel at the peak to create a little overhang and shed water. Nail it in place with 3–4 nails. The roof should now form a simple peaked shape.
Set the assembled birdhouse aside in a safe spot and let the wood glue dry completely. This usually takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the glue. While waiting, kids can plan their paint colors and decorations.
Once dry, let kids paint the birdhouse with non-toxic acrylic paint in any colors they like. Paint the walls, roof, or add fun designs like flowers, stripes, or polka dots. Use small brushes for details. Let the paint dry for at least an hour before handling. Add stickers, markers, or other decorations if desired.
Adult: Screw a small eye hook into the center top of the roof peak so the birdhouse can hang from a tree branch. Alternatively, attach a small L-bracket or screw directly through the back panel if you plan to mount it on a fence or post. Make sure it's secure.
Find a quiet spot in your yard about 5–15 feet off the ground — ideally near some trees or shrubs for cover. Hang the birdhouse from a sturdy branch using twine or wire through the eye hook, or mount it to a post or fence. Make sure the entrance hole faces away from strong winds and rain. Now wait for your feathered friends to move in!
