Build a sturdy three-step wooden stool perfect for reaching high shelves or as extra seating. This beginner-friendly project takes about 3-4 hours and requires basic woodworking tools. Great for anyone looking to add a practical handmade piece to their home.
Collect all your lumber and tools. Review the project dimensions: each step will be 12 inches wide and 10 inches deep, with risers of 7 inches between steps. Mark your cutting lines on the wood with a pencil and measuring tape.
Using your saw, cut three pieces from the 1x12 board, each 12 inches long. These will be your step treads. Sand the edges smooth with 120-grit sandpaper to remove any splinters.
From the 1x10 board, cut two identical side pieces that form a step pattern. Each should be 21 inches tall and create three levels at 7, 14, and 21 inches from the bottom. Mark the step notches 10 inches deep on each side piece before cutting.
Cut one piece from the 1x10 board measuring 12 inches wide by 21 inches tall. This will be the back support that connects the two side pieces and adds stability.
Sand all cut pieces with 120-grit sandpaper, then finish with 220-grit for a smooth surface. Pay special attention to edges and corners. Wipe away dust with a clean cloth.
Stand the two side pieces parallel to each other, 12 inches apart. Position the back support board flush with the back edges of both side pieces. Apply wood glue to the joints, then secure with 1.5-inch wood screws, drilling pilot holes first to prevent splitting.
Place the first step tread on the lowest level. Apply wood glue to the contact points, then secure from underneath or through the sides with 1.5-inch wood screws. Make sure it's flush with the front edge of the side supports.
Position the second tread on the middle level. Apply wood glue and secure with screws the same way as the bottom step. Check that it's level before the glue sets.
Place the final tread on the top level. Glue and screw it in place, ensuring it's secure and level. This will be the most-used step, so make sure all screws are tight.
Use wood filler to fill all visible screw holes and any gaps or imperfections. Apply with a putty knife, slightly overfilling each hole. Let dry completely according to product instructions (usually 30-60 minutes).
Once the wood filler is dry, sand the entire stool with 220-grit sandpaper, paying attention to the filled areas until smooth and flush with the wood surface. Wipe away all dust with a tack cloth.
Apply your choice of finish with a brush or cloth. For indoor use, polyurethane or Danish oil works well. Apply thin, even coats, following the wood grain. Let dry completely between coats (usually 2-4 hours).
Lightly sand with 220-grit sandpaper between coats if needed, then apply a second coat of finish for durability. Allow to cure for 24-48 hours before use. Your three-step stool is now complete!
