Decide on the length of your coat rack based on your space (typically 24-36 inches works well). Gather all your materials and tools in your workspace. Check that your board is straight and free of major cracks or warping.
Measure and mark your desired length on the 1x6 board. Use a square to draw a straight line across. Carefully cut the board to length using a hand saw or miter saw. Sand the cut end smooth with 120-grit sandpaper.
Decide how many hooks you want (usually 4-5 for a 30-inch rack). Mark the center line lengthwise on the board. Space hooks evenly, typically 6-8 inches apart, starting about 3 inches from each end. Use a pencil to mark each hook location clearly.
At each marked hook location, drill a pilot hole using a drill bit slightly smaller than the screw shaft of your hooks. This prevents the wood from splitting when you install the hooks. Drill straight and perpendicular to the board surface.
Sand all surfaces and edges of the board thoroughly, starting with 120-grit sandpaper and finishing with 220-grit for a smooth finish. Pay special attention to edges and corners to remove any splinters. Wipe away all dust with a clean cloth.
In a well-ventilated area, apply your chosen wood stain or finish using a brush or cloth, following the wood grain. Apply an even coat and wipe away excess according to product instructions. Let it dry completely (typically 4-8 hours or overnight).
Once the first coat is dry, lightly sand with 220-grit sandpaper if the surface feels rough. Wipe clean and apply a second coat of stain or finish for richer color and better protection. Allow to dry completely again.
Once the finish is completely dry, screw each coat hook into its pre-drilled pilot hole. Tighten firmly by hand, making sure each hook is secure and oriented the same direction. Don't over-tighten or you may strip the wood.
Hold the coat rack against the wall at your desired height (typically 5-6 feet from the floor). Use a level to ensure it's straight. Mark the wall through the mounting holes or mark where you'll drill mounting holes on the back of the rack.
If you haven't already, drill two mounting holes on the back of the rack, about 2 inches from each end and centered on the board's width. These holes should be large enough for your mounting screws to pass through easily. Countersink slightly if desired for a flush finish.
If you're not mounting into wall studs, install appropriate wall anchors at your marked locations. For drywall, use toggle bolts or heavy-duty anchors rated for at least 50 pounds. Drill holes and insert anchors according to package directions.
With help if needed, hold the coat rack level against the wall, aligning the mounting holes with your wall anchors or studs. Insert mounting screws through the back holes and tighten securely. Double-check that it's level before final tightening.
Gently test the coat rack by hanging a coat or bag on each hook to ensure it's securely mounted. Make any final adjustments if needed. Your handmade coat rack is now ready to use and will provide years of functional service.
