Build a beautiful wooden keepsake box perfect for storing jewelry, letters, or treasured items. This beginner-friendly woodworking project takes about 4-6 hours and requires basic tools. Great for gift-giving or organizing your own precious belongings.
Decide on your box size. A good starter size is 8 inches long × 6 inches wide × 4 inches tall. Gather all your wood, hardware, and tools. Check that your wood pieces are straight and free from major defects.
Measure and mark your base piece to 8 inches × 6 inches on the 1/2 inch plywood or solid wood board. Use a saw to cut carefully along your marked lines. Sand the edges smooth with 120-grit sandpaper.
Cut two long side panels: 8 inches long × 3.5 inches tall from your 1/2 inch wood. Then cut two short side panels: 5 inches long × 3.5 inches tall (accounting for the thickness of the long sides). Sand all edges smooth.
Cut the lid to the same dimensions as the base: 8 inches × 6 inches from 1/2 inch wood. This will sit flush on top. Sand smooth on all sides.
Arrange your base, four side panels, and lid without glue to check that everything fits properly. The sides should sit on top of the base edges. Make any needed adjustments by sanding or trimming.
Apply a thin, even bead of wood glue along the bottom edge and both side edges of one long side panel. Press it firmly onto one long edge of the base, ensuring it's perpendicular and flush. Wipe away excess glue with a damp cloth.
Apply glue to the bottom edge and one side edge of a short side panel. Attach it to the base, butting it against the long side you just glued. Make sure corners are square (90 degrees). Wipe excess glue.
Repeat the gluing process for the remaining two side panels, working around the base until all four sides are attached. Use the carpenter's square to keep corners at right angles. Let the glue dry for at least 30 minutes.
For extra strength, drive 1-inch brad nails through the sides into the base and into adjacent side panels at each corner. Pre-drill small pilot holes to prevent splitting. Use 2-3 nails per joint.
Once glue is fully dry, sand the entire box with 120-grit sandpaper, then switch to 220-grit for a smooth finish. Pay special attention to corners and edges. Wipe away all dust with a tack cloth or damp rag.
Place the lid on top of the box. Position two small brass hinges along the back edge, spacing them evenly (about 1.5 inches from each end). Mark screw hole locations with a pencil.
Pre-drill small pilot holes at your marked spots on the lid. Screw one half of each hinge to the lid using the small screws that come with the hinges. Make sure hinges are aligned straight.
Position the lid with attached hinges onto the back of the box. Mark and pre-drill holes for the other half of each hinge. Screw the hinges to the back panel of the box. Test that the lid opens and closes smoothly.
On the front of the box, center a small clasp or decorative latch. Mark and pre-drill holes, then screw it in place. This keeps the lid closed securely.
Using a brush or cloth, apply wood stain or clear finish (like polyurethane) evenly to all surfaces. Work in a well-ventilated area. Apply thin coats and let each coat dry completely (2-4 hours) before adding another. Two coats are usually sufficient.
After the final finish coat is completely dry (24 hours), lightly sand with 400-grit sandpaper for an ultra-smooth feel. Wipe clean and buff with a soft cloth. Your keepsake box is complete!
